Installing an Evo Spoiler on a 8V or 16V
Overview
This document describes the rear spoiler on Evolution model Integrales and modifications needed to install this spoiler on non-Evolution (8V or 16V) models.
The rear spoiler is mounted at the top of the rear hatch. Supports are attached by bolts to each side of the hatch and the spoiler itself is bolted onto the top of the supports. The support rests on a thick, molded rubber gasket. All bolts here are M5 hex socket head (0.8 pitch) cap screws, each 16mm long.
The high-lift spoiler (which many think of as “the” Integrale rear spoiler) is a modification to the original spoiler for Group A competition. It adds additional support brackets between the original supports and the spoiler itself. This bracket puts the spoiler in a more vertical orientation. There is also an aftermarket supports that accomplishes the same thing, but allows for that orientation to be adjusted.
Installation
To install an Evolution rear spoiler on non-Evolution Integrale, holes for the support need to be drilled into the hatch.
1. Mark the locations for the holes
A. Draw a line inset 12mm from the outer edge of the hatch for about 200 mm down from the top of the hatch.
B. At 140mm from the top of the line drawn in step A above, draw a perpendicular line. Where these lines meet is where a spoiler support bolt hole will be drilled.
C. At 170mm from the top of the line drawn in step A, draw a perpendicular line. Where these lines meet is where another spoiler support bolt hole will be drilled.
2. Where the drawn lines meet in steps 1B and 1C above, use a punch to marks where the holes will be drilled.
3. Drill holes 1/4-inch (6mm) at the points marked with the punch in step 2 above. Depending on your skill and experience drilling holes in precise locations, it might be easier to first drill the holes with a smaller diameter drill bit before expanding the hole out with the 1/4-inch bit.
4. Using a small file, remove any burrs left along the edge of the drilled holes. Holes needs to be drilled on both sides of the hatch, two holes on each side.
When installing each support, orient it with the wider portion facing downward. Remember to place the gasket between the support and the hatch.
The bolts attaching the support to the hatch may interfere with the hinge brackets and bolts that attach the hatch to the car. If this occurs, substitute the hex socket cap screws for button head cap screw.
High-lift Brackets
The stock Evolution model Integrale rear spoiler is attached to its supports with two bolts on each side. The threaded portion is in the spoiler itself. The high-lift brackets go in between the two. The lower portion is bolted through the support into the bracket. The upper portion is bolted through the bracket into the spoiler.
There is also a version of the bracket that is adjustable to position the spoiler between the stock Evo positions and the high-lift position.
